Isn’t it crazy to think about how far the internet and technological devices have come over the past 20 years, where we started with chunky box televisions to now having access to smart fridges that can tell us what groceries we are running low on and place an order straight from the fridge interface.
We now live in a time where even the least obvious products such as lights, our home security systems, cars, and seeing eyeglasses have either wireless, Bluetooth, or internet technology and while it is still in its infancy, it is rapidly progressing and moving forward with further improvements and adaptations.
And this is all due to the Internet of Things (IoT)! The Internet of Things is the process of connecting all things and places in the world to the internet, common examples of this that you might have seen include the Apple watch or self-driving cars such as the Tesla. These little (or not so little) devices are constantly gathering data about your age, exercise, heart rate, daily routines, local areas etc.
Thanks to the IoT, our lives have been made a lot easier through the connection of objects, people, and the environment. IoT sensors collect data that is transferred, analysed, and acted upon. Some basic objects in our day to day life include pressing a button on a TV remote control, listening to music through your Apple AirPods, sending a document to the printer to be printed, or simply by saying “Hey Siri, how can I write a blog post for uni in time to watch the Bachelor?” All this data is collected to help facilitate machine learning.
Some things that IoT enables outside of your home include online parking payments, public transport timetabling apps, the Uber app, rentable bicycles, and much more. Nowadays, our whole life revolves around the internet and our devices.
The Internet of Things is set to change the world and change the way companies do business. Companies can listen and respond to the needs of consumers by sending the right message at the right time, on the right device. This is achieved through analysing buying habits, having access to data and information about consumers, a better insight on the buying journey, and real-time interaction through relevant ads and notifications.
What are your thoughts on our internet and device usage? Would you be able to cope if it all disappeared tomorrow?
Feel free to leave any comments below, I would love to hear your thoughts!
I think as we keep evolving as a society we will become much more reliant on IoT's! I cant imagine a time i can be without my phone anymore either hahaa
I have mixed thoughts on the IoT. I believe the benefits for marketers are profound and there are some amazing products and services out there, such as smart fridges and apple watches. I however have some concerns over the privacy of it all.
